Reduced Data Formats for Neutron Reflection Data

It is often frustrating to read data from different neutron facilities in to a favourite data analysis or fitting program. There seems to be little information about file definitions that has been published. This is an 'unofficial' guide to data formats (with examples) that are currently found. These eight data formats are currently supported by the Neutron Reflectivity Analysis Software written by A. R. Rennie.

    Some notes about other data formats

    1. .DAT
      This is the original format that was used for drydoc and related programs but they can now read data in all nine formats described below. The file contains the number of data points on the first line and then 3 columns of numbers that represent Q, R(Q) and Err R(Q). Q is in A-1. The numbers may be separated by a space or a comma and are free format (F, E, etc.).

      Optionally the last line of the data file contains text that is included as a title in the plots. The data need not be sorted in to increasing Q and so a sort on read may be necessary for simple plotting programs.

    2. .ASC (or now .HIS)
      This is histogrammed data from ISIS (SURF or CRISP). It is a 'standard' output from the Genie data handling program. The first line is a title that is read and included in plots. The next 8 lines are header that describes the data. This includes the number of data points plus 1. The file below contains 53 intervals and not 54! There are 3 columns of numbers that represent the Q lower boundary, R(Q) and Err R(Q). The final line contains just one value and is the upper Q value for the last histogram bin. Q is in A-1.
      There is now (2007) a new ISIS histogram format with a different file termination that is described below. This old description is left as some of these files still remain to be analysed.

      This is designed for use with the AFIT program. The second line contains a title. The third line should contain the scattering length of the sub-phase/substrate in units of 10-6 A-2. The fourth line has information about the number of data points that follow in 3 columns of numbers that represent Q, R(Q) and Err R(Q). Q is in A-1.     4. .REFL
      This is the reduced data format from NIST NCNR, reflectivity programs. The header is identified by # and can be of variable length. Q is in A-1.
      The remaining header information (e.g. title) is fairly self-explanatory. The constituent raw data sets that have been used to create the reduced data are identified as spec and back for the signal and background respectively. Data sets with different ranges of Q are listed on different lines.

    6. .OUT
      A data file from D17 at the ILL, Grenoble and the LAMP (COSMOS) program. There is no definition of the length of the file and and the title from raw data is lost. Q is in A-1. The header information does not have a well-defined length as files can be constructed from different numbers of input raw data sets. These .OUT files are created with Unix lf and no carriage return. In contrast, a carriage return is deliberately added to other files from COSMOS although it is created on a UNIX system. Care is needed in transferring the different files to Windows/Mac computers for further treatment. The separators in the line above the data for q, refl, etc. are apparentlty, TAB characters.

      Comment: The fourth column in this file contains information about the resolution in Q for each data point. Often the separation of data points is much smaller than the resolution! Although this format could be useful for automated inclusion of resolution in subsequent data analysis, the poor statistics for each point that arise from the arbitrary, small bin size mean that in practice further processing of this data file will be needed.

    7. Parrat
    8. The following information is taken from the Help pages in version 1.5.2 of Parrat. The default extension is .DAT but this can be changed.
      File format is plain ASCII, three columns:
      	Qz 	R	error(R)
      
      These columns should be separated by either blank or a tab. Due to logarithmic representation of the data in the reflectivity window, negative values of R(Qz) should be omitted.

      This is similar to the format described as .DAT above but the initial line with number of data points must be omitted. It is also more restrictive as "," separators are not allowed and negative values of reflectivity are forbidden.

      Comment: Care is necessary in using this data format if negative points can occur from a background subtraction. The omission of these points may bias the results of a fit program. If reflectivity is measured to levels close to the sample/instrument background it is normal from the random statistics of counting that some points will be negative.

    9. .ASC - new RAL histogrammed data (2007)
      The new files of histogramed data are different to those described above ( .ASC / .HIS). The last line contains zeros in three columns. There is no specification of the upper boundary for the last data bin. Otherwise the file is similar to that used previously (See file type 2 described above.

      Comment:The last point probably has to be discarded in all analysis as this information is not available. The current software at ISIS usually provides data in either constant dQ or constant dQ/Q bins and so it is possible that inspection of the bin limits of other data bins could provide a guide to the likely upper bound for the last data bin!
